Devastated but not Destroyed?

As I was evaluating the weekend on this morning it dawned on me that it may be beneficial to share an application from Sunday’s sermon with those who are on the front lines of ministry. As we discussed the topic of being devastated but not destroyed Paul used some strong language to detail the reality of serving in ministry. Let’s be honest about, if you were in an interview for a job and the interviewer told you

  1. That the job is in transition (Old Covenant to New Covenant),
  2. Some people will not be able to see the benefit of your product (Veiled to those who do not have a personal relationship with Christ),
  3. You do not have the necessary skills to perform the task but it’s still yours (Earthen vessels),
  4. You will always be criticized and will always encounter trials (Afflicted in every way)
  5. At times you will feel like you are losing your mind (Perplexed but not in despair)
  6. People will harass you when you are most vulnerable (Persecuted but not forsaken)
  7. Abandonment is highly likely and so it total rejection (Cast down but not destroyed)
  8. It will feel like you are dying, but that is the point you will be most effective (Dying so that Christ can live through you)
  9. Physically dying but spiritually and emotionally thriving (Though your outer man is decaying, being renewed day by day)
  10. Oh yes, and don’t become discouraged (Do not lose heart)

Would you still be interested in this job if all these things were facts? This is exactly what Paul was detailing and explaining about Christian ministry. Please note that he did not say that this was the experience of paid staff but anyone who is serving in ministry. Can you answer the following questions after some thinking and praying?

  1. How do these realities align with your perspective of ministry?
  2. Which of these challenges will cause you the greatest challenge?
  3. How do these realities change your perspective of ministry?
  4. What do you need to do to endure such harsh work conditions?
